Summer is in full swing! Are you practicing safe sun? With the Fourth of July Holiday coming up, we want to take a moment to remind our patients to protect their skin by wearing sunscreen and protective clothing when outside.
Protective clothing goes a long way to keep your skin safe from exposure to the sun’s UV rays. However, not all clothing is created equal when it comes to providing sun protection. The AAD recommends wearing:
- Lightweight long sleeves and pants: We know it’s hot. But, choosing clothing that covers the most skin possible will help. To combat heat, choose light colors and breezy fabrics like linen. Avoid loose or open weaves like lace (these might accidentally leave you with a patterned tan or sun-burn!) Clothing does not protect you 100% as UV can penetrate the normal fabric weave. We recommend selecting UPF clothing that is more effective at stopping the suns rays.
- A billed or wide-brimmed hat: This will help shade your face and neck.
- UV sunglasses: Always look for glasses that offer UV protection, not all do.
- Closed toed shoes that cover the top of your foot. If you do wear sandals, remember to apply sunscreen to exposed areas.
Incorporate these protective clothing pieces into your weekend wardrobe to stay safe this Fourth of July weekend! Savannah River Dermatology is located at 575 Furys Ferry Rd in Augusta, Ga. For appointments or other questions, our office can be reached at 706-691-7079.
