What made you interested in Dermatology?
My answer is simple, it satisfied me in a way that no other specialty did throughout medical school. I left each day of my dermatology rotation ready to go back the next day. Not every rotation provoked that response. You may not be aware, but the skin is the largest organ of the body and therefore can be afflicted with multiple diseases. In addition, many times the skin is the window to things going on internally. I find it very rewarding to help someone indirectly with a problem going on internally, because of what I have diagnosed on their skin. I enjoy being able to treat both children and adults in dermatology, when most fields require you to choose to care for children or adults, but not both. Dermatology encompasses both the practice of both general and surgical medicine, which provides variety. And, finally I find it rewarding that I could visibly see my patients get better.
What is your skin care regimen Dr. Cely?
I believe the basics are an SPF of 30 or higher in the morning and retinol or retin-A at bedtime. I use Revision’s skin care line. I use Intellishade Matte SPF 45 in the morning which provides an SPF, a slight tint (intelligent to match all skin types) and several anti-aging ingredients. I love that I’m turning back the clock with my daily moisturizer. At bedtime, I use Retinol complete. Once you establish these 2 essential practices, then you can add on products to target your personal needs. I struggle with dark circles, so I like Revision’s Teamine eye cream which helps the puffiness and dark circles. I also use Revision’s Vitamin C lotion to help combat the brown spots.
What is your favorite over-the-counter product for skin?
Neutrogena Hydroboost gel moisturizer. It keeps your skin looking supple and hydrated every day. It contains hydrating hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in the skin, and acts as a sponge for dry skin cells, absorbing up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Plus it’s fragrance, dye and oil-free. It’s a great product to combat the dryness from retinols.
What is one fun fact about you?
I am a dual citizen. I am a citizen of both the United States and Canada. My mom is from the U.S. and my dad is originally from Canada. I was born and raised in the U.S. but maintain a dual citizenship.
