With the winter weather officially set in here in Augusta, many of us are familiar with the discomfort and frustration that accompanies dry skin. The cold temperatures, low humidity, and indoor heating systems can strip our skin of its natural moisture, leaving it feeling tight, flaky, and irritated. However, with a few simple changes to your skincare routine and lifestyle, you can effectively relieve dry winter skin and restore a healthy, radiant glow.
Use Warm Not Hot Water
When taking a bath or shower, use warm rather than hot water. Limit your bathing time to five or ten minutes to help reduce the amount of time your skin is exposed to water.
Choose Gentle Cleansing Options
Opt for a gentle, hydrating cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils. Harsh cleansers can exacerbate dryness, so look for products with moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. Limit your time in the shower and use lukewarm water instead of hot water, as hot water can further dehydrate the skin.
Moisturize Regularly
Invest in a rich, emollient moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated throughout the day. Look for products that contain ingredients like shea butter, ceramides, or jojoba oil, as these can help lock in moisture and provide a protective barrier against the harsh winter elements. Apply moisturizer immediately after showering to seal in the moisture on damp skin.

Protect with SPF
Don’t forget the importance of sun protection, even in the winter months. UV rays can still damage your skin, leading to premature aging and increasing your risk for skin cancer. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every morning, especially if you spend extended periods outdoors.
Last but not least, make sure you’re keeping up with changes in your skin’s appearance. If you notice any unusual spots, make your annual appointment to come in for a skin screening!
