Cold weather is cozy… until your skin starts itching, cracking, and begging for moisture. If winter leaves you dealing with dry, irritated, or flaky skin, you’re not alone. Dry skin is extremely common during colder months — but the good news is, it’s also preventable and treatable.
Here’s what winter really does to your skin and our dermatologist-backed tips to soothe and protect it all season long.
Why Skin Gets Drier in Winter
Winter delivers a one-two punch to your skin, cold, dry outdoor air draws moisture out of your skin, while heated indoor air drops humidity even further, worsening water loss. Other measures to protect against illness such as frequent handwashing (which don’t get us wrong, is a good thing!) also adds to dryness. The result? Itchy, rough, flaky, irritated skin.
How to Prevent Winter Dryness by Locking in Moisture
The best defense against itchy skin is keeping the skin barrier strong and hydrated.
Here are our tips to keep your skin hydrated during the cold winter months:
- Use a thick, fragrance-free cream (not lotion!) daily. Creams contain more oils and create a protective barrier that locks in moisture.
- Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing while skin is still slightly damp.
- Keep a travel-size cream handy for after handwashing.
- Don’t forget lip balm — lips lose moisture quickly in cold weather.
- Run a humidifier at home to replenish moisture lost due to indoor heating systems.
Prioritize Creams over Lotions
Not all body lotions are made equal! In fact, “lotions” are actually made of mostly water, which doesn’t help lock in moisture. Look for skincare products that are labeled “moisturizer” or “cream” for products that are oil based.
Choose Skin-Friendly Products
Some common household products can be irritating on our skin. Try to use alcohol-free soaps and sanitizers and fragrance-free laundry detergents if you’re dealing with sensitivity. Additionally, some warm fabrics, including wool and synthetics, can irritate dry or sensitive skin. Try to wear breathable cotton or bamboo as a base layer and avoid garments that rub or scratch irritated areas.
When to Seek Help
You should contact a dermatologist if you experience:
- Persistent itching
- Cracked or bleeding skin
- Painful rashes
- Signs of eczema or infection
Healthy hydration habits and the right winter routine can make all the difference and most dryness can be managed at home. However, if you notice any of the above, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
