Today we’re talking about the big C – Skin Cancer. While skin cancer is something you hear us talk about often, it’s not something we want to you to get used to or take lightly. Skin cancer is a very real concern and we see it on patients weekly! Here are some facts you might not know about skin cancer.
Facts About Skin Cancer
- One in Five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. More people get diagnosed with skin cancer than those that get diagnosed with breast, prostate, colon and lung cancer each year (skincancer.org).
- Skin cancer can spread. The most common skin cancers, basal cell and squamous, are locally invasive, meaning that they affect tissue near the cancer. However, melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, can metastasize and invade other parts of the body.
- When detected early, the 5-year survival rate for melanoma is 99 percent. However, approximately 2 people die every hour in America from complications of skin cancer. That’s why it’s so important to check your skin for changes and get an annual exam to ensure you’re not missing any signs of skin cancer. Early detection is key!
- Skin cancer can develop in unexpected areas – even those places that don’t “see the sun.” Your face is the most common area for a skin cancer diagnosis. Melanomas are more likely to develop on parts of the body exposed to ultraviolet light, such as the head, neck, and ears. However, they can also appear in less expected places, including areas shielded from the sun, like the soles of your feet or regions typically covered by swimwear.
- Your skin can become sun damaged even on cloudy days. The sun still emits UV light, which penetrates clouds and can result in sunburn. Over 90% of UV rays can pass through a light cloud cover and cause sunburn. UV levels tend to be highest under cloudless skies, and cloud cover generally reduces a person’s exposure, but you can still get a sunburn on a cloudy day!
While skin cancer can be scary, we do want to remind you that you can take active steps to protect your skin every day! Wear an SPF of 30+ or more every day – even on days you don’t necessarily spend time in the sun. We accumulate more sun exposure than you might think while driving, walking to the mailbox, walking the dog, or even sitting in a office by a window!
