Here at Savannah River Dermatology we are proud to offer laser treatments including BBL and HALO treatments to our patients. These treatments are a great option for patients looking to treat a variety of issues including signs of aging, skin redness, sun damage, and more. Interested in learning more about these services? Talk with your physician at your next appointment or call us to book!
Since these treatments resurface skin and expose a new layer of skin, they can increase your skin’s susceptibility to sun damage and thus require the use of extra sun protection. That’s why we typically don’t recommend getting them during the Summer months while everyone is spending more time outside. With the onset of Fall, there has never been a better time to come in and see us for your laser treatment!
We realize that you may have questions about what to expect after a laser treatment. We’re here to answer those!
During laser skin resurfacing, the ablative wavelengths vaporize the outer layers of the skin, effectively removing sun-damaged or aging skin cells. This leads to improved skin texture and a reduction in wrinkles and fine lines. However, due to the intensity of this treatment, recovery time can be up to a week or more.
On the other hand, non-ablative wavelengths target deeper skin tissue by heating it without affecting the surface. This gentler method stimulates collagen and elastin production, resulting in smoother, more radiant skin over time. Since the surface remains intact, downtime is minimal, although multiple sessions may be required for optimal results.
Your provider will tailor your HALO treatment by adjusting the balance of ablative and non-ablative wavelengths, ensuring the best outcomes while working within your preferred downtime.
What to Expect For HALO
Immediately After Treatment: You’ll likely feel a sunburn-like sensation on the treated areas.
24 Hours Post-Treatment: Redness and sensitivity typically peak around this time.
Days 2 to 3: Swelling may increase slightly, reaching its peak during this time. The skin takes on a bronzed appearance as the laser’s effects begin working on the deeper layers.
Days 3 to 5: Swelling should begin to subside. The skin may feel tight and dry as peeling starts, revealing the fresh skin beneath.
Days 5 to 7: Peeling nears completion but may continue for a few days longer if your treatment was more aggressive.
Weeks 1 to 2: Healing is nearly complete. Your skin tone evens out, and the results become visible. Resume your regular skincare routine unless your provider’s specific instructions say otherwise.
Beyond 2 Weeks: You’ll see continued skin texture and tone improvement as collagen regeneration progresses and any residual redness fades.
Recovery Recommendations after HALO Laser Treatment
While our team will go over after post-treatment steps with you, here are some general tips to help support your skin’s recovery:
- Use over-the-counter pain relievers and cold compresses to alleviate swelling, redness, and discomfort.
- Resist the temptation to scratch if your skin feels itchy.
- Cleanse your face twice daily with lukewarm water and a soft, gentle cleanser. Avoid hot water and harsh products that may irritate sensitive skin.
- Start applying a high SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen the day after your treatment.
- Keep your skin hydrated with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer.
- For at least a month post-treatment, avoid retinoids, exfoliants, and other potential irritants that could disrupt the healing process.
- Hold off on wearing makeup until your skin has finished peeling to allow it to heal properly.
- Avoid strenuous exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating for at least a week to prevent irritation and swelling.
