Skin cancer is one of the most common — and one of the most visible — cancers. Because it usually begins where you can see it, early detection is often possible. But here’s the catch: skin cancer doesn’t always show up where you’d expect. It can appear in areas you rarely think to check, and the signs aren’t always dramatic. May is Skin Cancer Awareness month and here at Savannah River Dermatology, we want to empower you with knowledge so you can spot the subtle signs of skin cancer early — when it’s easiest to treat.
Skin Cancer Can Appear Almost Anywhere
It’s true: you can develop skin cancer from head to toe. While it often forms on sun-exposed areas, it can also develop in places you might not consider, like:
- Your scalp (under your hair)
- Between your toes or on the soles of your feet
- Under a fingernail or toenail (appearing as a dark streak)
- On your lips or inside your mouth
- On your genitals
Even areas that get little to no sun exposure aren’t off-limits. That’s why a thorough skin check is key.
What to Look For
Skin cancer doesn’t always look the same. It might appear as:
- A mole that changes shape, size, or color
- A dome-shaped bump
- A rough, scaly patch
- A sore that doesn’t heal or heals and comes back
- A dark streak under a nail
The easiest way to remember? If you notice a spot that:
- Differs from the others
- Changes
- Itches
- Bleeds
…it’s time to have it checked.
You can feel completely fine and still have skin cancer. Many people who find a suspicious spot don’t feel sick or experience pain. That’s why regular skin checks are so important — especially if you’ve had skin cancer before.
Start a Monthly Skin Check Routine
The best defense is getting into the habit of checking your skin monthly. Look over your entire body, including those hard-to-see areas like your back, scalp, and the bottoms of your feet.

What Happens if You Find a Suspicious Spot?
If you spot something concerning, don’t wait — schedule a visit with your dermatologist. They may perform a skin biopsy, which involves removing all or part of the suspicious area. This quick, in-office procedure is the only way to confirm whether or not you have skin cancer.
If cancer cells are found, your dermatologist will explain the next steps. If the biopsy comes back clear, that’s peace of mind you can count on.
