What made you interested in dermatology?
When I was in college, I spent some time shadowing a dermatology physician assistant in Athens, GA. I really enjoyed watching her interact with patients and do procedures to see if patients had skin cancer. Once I got to PA school, I still enjoyed dermatology so I pursued it throughout my studies, and luckily I was able to jump right in when I graduated in 2014. I love being able to see patients of all different ages, and I’ve learned that skin can be unpredictable at times, so I always have to be on my toes.
What is your number one recommendation for patients to protect their skin?
Never forget your sunscreen! No matter what! Hats are great too, but it’s so important to consistently use SPF, even if you don’t think the sun is out. I also try to reinforce that creams are usually better than sprays, and even if you use a spray you need to rub it in. Also keep in mind that sunscreen only lasts 80 minutes (even in moisturizers and makeup!), which isn’t really that long. You need at least 30 SPF to protect your skin.
What is one fun fact about you?
I love mission trips, and in January 2017 I was able to go to Kenya and help with a dermatology clinic there. This was my second medical mission trip, but I’ve also been to the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Amsterdam on mission trips.
What is your favorite cosmetic product?
Right now, I would have to say Revision’s Teamine Eye Cream is the one thing I never leave home without. It’s the only cosmetic product I bring on trips with me besides make-up because it takes away any under eye puffiness that comes up in the mornings. It doesn’t take much to make a difference, so the little jar lasts for a long time.
What is your favorite over-the-counter product for skin?
Neutrogena’s Hydroboost Gel has been really impressing me. It feels really great on the skin without being thick or sticky, and the hyaluronic acid helps a ton with dryness. I’ve found it makes retinols much more tolerable and helps the skin to look and feel healthy.
